Above is a cool gps view of the Rocky Gap south loop (in red.) (Our favorite, large group, trail.) Much thanks to Mike. Z.
Allegheny National Forest Trails.
"All forestry roads with a brown gate are open to biking." There are a few areas of the ANF off limits, but these roads virtually create hundreds of miles of doubletrack. One word of caution, bring a GPS if you have one. Forestry roads intersect with miles of lease roads. Once off the main route, it is impossible to distinguish between them. If you are unsure, check with the forestry service. The recent rides page gives some examples of combining different roadways on the GPS links. REMEMBER TO NEVER PARK WHERE YOU WILL BE BLOCKING A ROADWAY. These roadways provide some nice routes for casual riding.
Aside from the roads, here are some of our favorite ANF rides. This is where things begin to get more technical.
A mouse eye view up Rocky Gap. The south loop can be done by a novice rider in 2 -2.5 hrs.. It provides several ups and downs, but nothing that is unrideable. The north loop is a fast drop into the Grunderville valley, followed by a grueling climb back. This trail is for more advanced riders.
Enjoy the areas that are open to us, and help us make better neighbors with those who don't know us yet.
What about the rest of the PA. Wilds? There are plenty of riding opportunities in the area. Check back as we explore deeper into the Wilds and promote positive trail development.
